I recently upgraded my workstation and Asus EEE to Ubuntu 8.04. To save on screen space on my UMPC, the top button was set to autohide. Hacked around on my new eeepc for a few hours pushing together a very similar setup - this was the last thing to figure out. Thanks for posting your workaround.
